A Dutch Brand Built Around Better Walking
Wolky began after the Diks brothers noticed that traditional cork footbeds could provide support but often felt too hard. Instead of accepting that tradeoff, they developed their own approach to comfort and launched Wolky in 1982. Their first sandal, the Alto, introduced a wide, flat design with a memory-foam footbed and adjustable straps, establishing the comfort philosophy that still influences Wolky today.
Memory Foam Is Part of the Wolky Story
Memory foam is not simply a recent addition to Wolky footwear. It has been part of the brand's comfort concept since its early days, when Wolky developed a footbed combining memory foam with a soft suede surface. Current Wolky memory-foam footwear continues to use cushioning designed to absorb impact while supporting the foot during everyday movement.
Footbeds Designed Around the Shape of Your Foot
Wolky uses anatomically shaped footbeds rather than treating the insole as a flat layer of padding. Many models have removable footbeds, which can also make them useful for shoppers who need additional flexibility when choosing their own orthotic inserts. The exact construction differs by style, so checking the individual product specifications is important when a removable footbed or particular level of support is a priority.
Sandals With Adjustability Built In
Adjustability has been part of Wolky's identity since the original Alto sandal. Current Wolky sandals continue to use adjustable straps on selected designs, allowing the fit to be modified around the foot instead of relying on a fixed opening. This makes styles such as the Wolky Desh especially practical for everyday walking, with its adjustable Velcro closure, anatomically shaped footbed, memory-foam cushioning, and soft leather lining.
European Craftsmanship With a Long History
Wolky's footwear is designed in-house and much of its production remains connected to European craftsmanship. The brand says around 90% of each Wolky shoe is still made by hand, with production moving from the Netherlands to Portugal as demand increased and the company sought skilled artisans who could work with its custom soles. That hands-on approach remains an important part of Wolky's identity.
A Shoe for Feet With Different Needs
Wolky has expanded beyond general comfort footwear to create styles for different foot requirements. Its Special collections include footwear designed for wider feet, hallux valgus, diabetic feet, uneven feet, and other specific needs, alongside waterproof and vegan options. This makes the brand particularly interesting for shoppers who need to consider fit and foot shape before focusing on appearance alone.
Walking Shoes That Work Beyond the Trail
Wolky's focus on walking does not mean every style looks like a traditional walking shoe. The collection includes sandals, sneakers, boots, slip-ons, and more fashion-oriented designs, allowing the comfort features to fit into different wardrobes. For another brand that puts everyday support at the center of its designs, the Vionic collection is worth comparing.
Comfort for Long Days and Travel
Wolky's combination of cushioning, anatomical shaping, and adjustable construction makes the brand well suited to situations where you expect to spend a lot of time on your feet. The company specifically positions its footwear around helping women walk more comfortably through active everyday life, from morning activities to evening walks.
